Overview

Durham is the darling of the independent school sector, taking comfortably the highest proportion of privately educated students of any British university. But it is working hard to dispel its elitist image, offering some of the most generous bursaries and scholarships, and steadily widening participation. 'The Durham difference' is not just an old marketing handle for the university, but a reflection of its unique constitution. It is collegiate like Oxford and Cambridge, but the 16 undergraduate colleges are essentially social groupings rather than academic ones. Colleges are split between the Bailey (the older ones in the streets around the cathedral and castle) and the Hill (just to the south of the city centre, where the newer colleges have sprouted up). Durham Castle itself is home to University College, the oldest college, which is the most popular with applicants. This is closely followed by Collingwood, a Hill college that has benefited from significant philanthropic investment in its social and sports facilities. Durham's all-round academic strengths span the arts, sciences and social sciences.

Paying the bills

More than one in five undergraduates will receive some form of financial support next year. The income threshold for eligibility for the Durham grant is being raised this month to £62,342, which should bring around 900 extra students within reach of support. The award starts at £700 a year (for those from households with income between £47,201 and £62,342), rising on a sliding scale from £835 to £2,669 (for wbc247도메인 a household income of £47,200 down to £30,000) and topping out at £2,670 (less than £30,000). There are many scholarships available, too, worth more than £600,000 a year between them. Several target students recruited from the North East, and are paid to students from homes with an income of less than £42,875. University accommodation costs here are among the highest in the country, with private rents also out of whack with the rest of the North East rental market. Self-catered rooms start at £6,806 for 39 weeks and rise to £7,430, while catered accommodation in college costs from £9,746 (for a 39-week tenancy with 30 weeks of term-time food) up to £10,370.

What's new?

A new building for the renowned Durham University business school will be opened this year. The Waterside building was originally constructed as a new county hall before being sold off to the university. The College of St Hild & St Bede (Hild Bede as it is known) is being redeveloped throughout the 2024-25 academic year, displacing its students into formerly private accommodation just off the city centre. For students applying to Durham for September 2025, the revamped college will be an attractive prospect. The university prides itself on its wider student experience in which 85% of students participate, be that in university and college sport, college life, volunteering, theatre, music or student media. As a result of this, it has developed a leadership academy to help the more than 3,500 students who are in formal leadership roles, giving them access to personal and group mentoring, immersive training programmes, workshops and a speaker series. The university's student support project is also seeing an extra £1.3m a year invested in services. Dedicated student support roles have been established in every academic department, and a new case-management system will ensure that students don't have to tell their story twice.

Admissions, teaching and student support

'We will deliver a step change in widening access and participation, boosting the proportion of our students coming from under-represented or less advantaged backgrounds, as well as engaging actively with younger learners in regional schools and colleges,' the university told us. This statement of intent aims to address a situation where just 8% of last year's undergraduate intake at Durham came from its home region, which has the lowest rates of take-up of higher education in England. There were more than four times as many students recruited here from London and the South East. The number of black students is up, as are those drawn from postcodes with the lowest levels of university participation, but it is a long road ahead for Durham. With one in four home entrants receiving contextual offers that are mostly two grades below the standard course requirements, there are good prospects of a gradual shift in perceptions about the university. The excellent support provision outlined in What's new, above, serves a significant need, with more than 5,000 (23% of the student body) disclosing a disability - with mental health the most common single category. The university also offers specialist support for autistic students, including allowing them to arrive at university before other students. Supervised study groups are on hand to help students manage their studies effectively, which can be particularly helpful for those with an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosis. Each college has a student support office and operates a pastoral tutor system to give students a personal point of contact if problems arise. All new students have to take a Consent Matters - Boundaries, Respect and Positive Intervention course as part of their induction.
